Chemistry 223

1.    Describe the nature and composition of atoms

2.    Describe the nature of the various forces that hold atoms together to
       matter.

3.    Identify and describe the structures of the various kinds of matter and
relate those structures to bulk properties

4.    Describe changes in matter using chemical equations

5.    Quantify amounts of matter and various energies (heat, electricity,
       nuclear) involved in nuclear change.

6.    Quantify the characteristics of gases

7.    Quantify the description of solutions using a variety of concentration units

8.    Describe and quantify the colligative properties of solutions

9.    Describe and quantify how changes at the atomic and nuclear level
relate to observable factors of reaction rate

10.  Describe and apply quantitatively the concept of chemical equilibrium to
       various chemical and physical changes

11.  Identify and describe acids and bases and quantify their behavior in
      solutions

12. Use chemical principles to analyze an environmental issue in depth

13. In the laboratory,

     A.  Use standard laboratory equipment safely and properly

     B.  Apply the concepts of precision and accuracy to laboratory
          measurements

     C.  Conduct accurate and precise measurements of mass and volume,
          including Volume measurement by pipetting.

     D.  Conduct accurate and precise measurements of concentration through
titration and use of pH meters and visible spectroscopy

  Assessment

Competencies 1-12 will be assessed by performance on quizzes, midterm examinations, and final examinations, including a final examination for    CH -223 that covers the competencies for the entire year’s sequence.

Competency 13 will be assessed by the quality of results from experiments as indicated in laboratory reports.

  Benchmarks

At least 70% of the students will demonstrate the ability to do 65% or more of the competencies.
